The Neno district

Legends of early neno

The Neno Boma in the 1950's had become a sub-district of Mwanza, but in very early days it had its own District Commissioner. Dozens of magnificent game trophies covered the walls of the D.C.'s house. At one time the house is supposed to have contained the first billiards table in the country. Wheat amazing power those first officials wielded, and how on earth did anyone manage to head load the slate beds of a billiards table from a boat on the Zambezi river.

For Neno was on one of the first trade routes into the country. Between Neno and Blantyre is Walkers Ferry a point on the Shire river, and from there travelers climbed up to what is now Blantyre. David Livingstone is said to have disbanded some of his servants near Walkers Ferry, giving gifts before departing for England. There is a headman in Neno who had, perhaps still has a brass traveling trunk and inside the lid it states "Made in Blantyre". Of course, in Scotland.
