The neno macadamia trust malawi
Past, present and future of Macadamia farming in Neno.

The Past

Neno smallholder Macadamia growers have reached their present situation through their own initiative, by grasping an opportunity with both hands. They have been helped over the past eight years by many post graduates from Cranfield University (Silsoe College), each volunteering to spend about a year living in Neno. These young people have contributed enormously in bridging the income gap between planting the Macadamia crop and benefiting from its income. They have also contributed to every aspect of its development including writing the tree proposals for funding to the British High Commission and the Scottish Executive. The Trust has latterly liaised between the growers, the volunteers and the College.

The Present
The Trust is in the process of acquiring secure suitable leasehold land on which to build. Now that the Scottish Executive has taken over from the British High Commission the support role to SUNESMA and NESMAC, the Trust will concentrate on marketing.

The Future
It is not possible for thousands of individual growers each to sell one or two bags of nuts on the international market. Therefore, The Trust intends to create a marketing business where Neno smallholder Macadamia growers can maximise revenue from their investment in this crop. The Trust will construct a building open to all growers.
Received in shell, the nuts will be sampled, dried, bulked and offered for sale at premium prices. It will be a not-for-profit business. It will have a capital fund allowing growers to be paid on delivery. Precise details will evolve, but these are the principals.
